Finding The Most Important Thing (Part 1)

What is the most important thing in the world you could possibly discover? I'll share with you in this article.

A few days ago, I turned 29, and I have never been happier. I'd define true happiness as a measure of similarity between your life expectations and your life reality. I’m living the life I pictured I would live when I was a kid. I’m growing every day, in all dimensions - spiritually, mentally, financially, physically. I’ve been able to find some success in the things I have a passion for, and that’s a great feeling.

“Success is not what you have done, compared to other people. Success is what you have done, in comparison to what you were created to doâ€. — Dr. Myles Monroe.

To find success, you must find yourself. This is the most important thing in this world to find - Yourself.

I've found my life's work and I'm excited to do it. 9 to 5 I work at Marsh Canada as AVP & IT Project Manager, building Insurance software. Weekends and evenings, I run a successful training company, with my Business Partner, where we teach immersive courses that help people get into Tech related careers. We’ve trained thousands of people who have now gone on to be tremendously successful, landing 6-figure paying tech / consulting jobs, across the globe.

I haven’t figured everything out yet, and I’m not exactly where I’d like to be, but I’ve gained a good amount of life experience and learnt some important success principles. I can empathize with young professionals like myself on their individual journeys to find happiness. I’d like to highlight a number of things I learnt along my journey. These principles will guide you to happiness as you find and do your life’s work. I’ll try to provide only game-changing, non-obvious, and non-intuitive advice.

Finding Success with Your Work (Career & Business)

Whether you’re running a business or leading a Career, I’ve written out these pointers, to cater to both types of professionals.

1. Find your Passion.

Finding your Passion is the first step towards living a meaningful life. To succeed exceedingly well in something, you must have a deep passion for it. This is because you will require countless hours of work and study to master the art or skill. Here’s a tip to find your passion from Pastor Wale Akinsinku (PWA); Ask yourself — what unlocks my self-discipline? What are some valuable things I find myself able to do for many hours, of many days without anyone needing to push me? This is probably where your passion lies.

2. Create a Business system.

Passion is never enough, and passion without consistent action is a waste. I’ve seen many people self-employ themselves, from their passion. This is a good start, but eventually, you need to create a Business system out of your Passion. To achieve true financial freedom, you must create a system that generates income for you, in a way where you don’t need to increase your work hours, to increase your income. For example, if you were employed at a job, where you got paid $25 per hour, in a 40 workweek you would make $1000. The only way to make more than $1000 at this job, in a given week, is to work more hours.

Contrast this with a business, like a training class. If you taught an 8-hour master class where you charged each student $200, with 5 students, you would make $1000 a day. If there was a spike in demand and the student size increased to 15, you would make $3000 a day. The difference between this and a job is that you spending the same 8 hours in the class, but your income is 3X more.

The trick here, however, is not just to be self-employed, but to truly build a system around your Business that increases your income without having to increase your work effort, as the Business owner.

Take for example a self-employed, independent Plumber. S/he may take on many jobs a day, but if they were to get sick, or go on vacation, and could not work, they would not make any money from plumbing. To create a Business system, in this case, would be to train a sales team who can sell clients plumbing services, and a delivery team who can work on jobs.

Don’t be self-employed. Create a Business system. Being self-employed might actually be tougher than working in paid employment. Being self-employed creates more risk, for a limited up-side.

I am so convinced about this, I could write a whole book. Others have. I recommend the book — The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco to learn more about the value of creating a Business system that runs itself, the best systems, and how to build them. Remember, however — running a business is easy. Growing a business is hard.

3. Build a Personal Brand.

Identify one thing you want to be known for, become the best at it, and then showcase your expertise to the world. If you do this, whenever people in your network have opportunities in line with your personal brand, they will think of you first. A typical example, is how many people around me now address me as the “Project Management, Tech start-up guyâ€. As a result, I get invited to speaking engagements relating to my brand expertise. At these speaking engagements, I meet more potential customers interested in taking our training programs. It's a self-reinforcing loop. This did not happen by accident, it was a deliberate effort on my part that I committed to.

4. Build and nurture Relationships.

Surround yourself with the right people. If you’re always the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. Most of the strategic opportunities I have enjoyed in my career and business were brought to me by people in my network. Learn to network genuinely, and often. In addition, you must learn to manage transitions carefully.

There are multiple transitions in life. Examples of some likely transitions include — moving from one job to another, moving out of your family’s home, starting a new Business partnership, ending a relationship.

You will have many moments of transition in life. How you manage the relationships with the people you are transitioning away from, and the people you are transitioning to, is extremely important. I can’t stress this enough. It’s a small world. There is a popular saying — “ Be nice to everyone on your way up. You’ll meet the same people on your way downâ€.

I know it may seem really exciting to finally leave your job and your annoying boss, with a big rant and a loud noise, storming out and slamming the door behind you. That might feel good for 10 minutes, maybe even 10 hours, but the long term consequences of actions like that are not good.

5. Learn to lead and influence others.

In Leadership, which do you think is more important? A â€” Understanding your team, or B â€” Your team understanding you?

Only a few years ago, I thought B was more important. I tried to get people to understand my needs as best as I could. I tried to showcase myself as the smartest, most audible person in the room. That didn’t get me too far. It actually made me a target. Some people just hated my guts.

After banging my head on the wall a few times, I ultimately learnt to move more strategically. I learnt to observe people, observe their interests, their motivation, their style. I learnt how to listen twice, and speak once. Doing this enabled me present my suggestions to people in the language they understood, and in a way that piqued my interest. It allowed me anticipate their reservations before hand, and prepare for them in time. This really helped me achieve my goals quicker.

At the beginning of this article, I asked — what is the most important thing in the world you could discover? The most important thing to discover, is Yourself.

Read This If You Want To Transition to Tech In 2022

SkillHat launches motivated professionals into dream careers in Tech. In 2021, our students landed dream jobs as Business Analysts, Scrum Masters, Project Managers, and Product Owners. We focus on roles that do not require coding.

While helping others, we’ve learned a lot ourselves, and we would like to share these learnings. If you want to transition into tech, read these, and apply for one of our programs.

  • Anyone can transition into tech: We’ve seen people transition into technology roles from all walks of life such as customer service, sales, healthcare, etc. You may be thinking to yourself — I don’t have a background in computer science, and it may be a barrier. It’s not. Start by identifying your transferrable skills, and a learning path. The most common transferrable skill is communication.
  • It takes time to transition: Even with the required skills and experience, it can take 2–6 months to land a good job. Transitioning from a different industry may extend that timeline. This might not be what you want to hear, but it’s important to start a journey with the right expectations. You don’t want to go on a flight thinking it’ll take 4 hours and while on board you find out the flight really takes 20 hours. If you know you’re going on a 20 hour flight you’re going to download a few albums, get a book, and a pillow. Having realistic expectations of how long your transition might take will help reduce frustration and pain.
  • The transition process can be accelerated through community: To transition, it’s critical to immerse yourself in a community of experts, and like minds. A community will keep you encouraged, and make your goals feel more attainable. You will also gain a lot of insight into privileged information such as nuances of certain companies & roles, salary, interview tips etc.
  • Find A Mentor: A mentor is someone whose past is your future. Once you identify the role you want to transition to, recruit someone who is 2 steps ahead of that role, to mentor you into landing the role, and beyond.
  • Intern & Volunteer: Doing the work helps you get the job. Look for every opportunity to actually do the work you would do within the full time job you want. If you want to get into User Experience Design (UI / UX), start performing user research and designing interfaces. If you want to get into Project Management, find a small team / project and manage it. You’ll find out if it’s what you are truly passionate about, you’ll have more in your portfolio, and you’ll perform better at interviews as you’ll be more memorable since you have interesting stories.
  • Personality & passion give you an edge: One of the great things about working in tech is that you can bring your personality to work, and it actually gives you an edge. Software development & innovation isn’t rigid like medicine or accounting where you have to do things by the book, following a defined process with little room for creativity. Find what you have a passion for, where your creativity can shine, and throw yourself at that space.
  • Lack of confidence is one of the biggest barriers: We see a lot of people who perform well in our classes, do well in their case studies and exams but freeze during job interviews. We get it. Interviews can be intimidating, and so is doing something new. However, to attract success, you must project success. You must build your confidence to make a successful transition. Applying the learnings above will help build your confidence. There are many tips for confidence building you can find on the internet, but i’ll leave you with just one — prepare. I personally have found that the more prepared I was, the more confident I became, and effectively the better I performed, so — prepare like your life depends on it.

Let’s Build The Future.

5 Major Lessons I’ve Learnt as a Project Coordinator

I am currently a Project Coordinator at Infrastructure Ontario. I function as a Claims Coordinator on the Finch West Light Rail Transit Project. The goal of the Project is to expand transit in the Greater Toronto Area. On this project, I primarily coordinate the administration and reporting of claims arising from Contractors. A claim is simply a demand for something due or believed to be due.

As a Project Coordinator, I am also involved in other ad-hoc activities such as taking meeting minutes and managing project documents. Working on a large transit project, there is a lot to learn. I’d love to share a few of the things I have picked up along the way in my 2 years on the job:

1. Facilitation

A man in a suit and tie standing outside.

You don’t have to know all the answers

One of the biggest lessons I have learnt is that I don't have to know all the answers to lead a meeting. My role is to facilitate the stakeholders. I prepare as much as I can before every meeting, but there is security in also knowing that my teammates are there to support and provide additional input during meetings. When I don’t have an answer to a question, I’d usually say: “That’s a great question. Bob (my teammate), what do you think about that?â€

Make sure you invite the right stakeholders to meetings to ensure that when technical questions are asked, you can direct the question to the individual most knowledgeable. In cases where I do not have all the answers, I learnt to say things like: “I do not have that information right now but I will touch base with Bob and circle back with you before the end of dayâ€. This tactic gives me some leeway to provide an answer at a later point.

2. Positive Attitude

A man in a suit and tie standing outside.

Maintain a can-do attitude

I have learnt to always keep a positive attitude towards my colleagues and my work regardless of how terrible the day is. This is not always easy, but it is a choice I’ve learnt to make each day. This has caused people to be more receptive towards my requests - even when they may be strenuous on the individual.

3. Resilience

A man in a suit and tie standing outside.

Focus on continuous improvement

Mistakes may happen. What matters more is how we react to the mistakes. I have learnt to focus less on my mistakes, and more on the areas that need improvement. Perfection is not the goal - The goal is to remain open and willing to learn and improve.

4. Ask Questions

A man in a suit and tie standing outside.

Don’t make assumptions

As a Project Coordinator, asking questions has become an essential habit. Typically, I’d try to figure it all out myself in an attempt to save myself from admitting that I do not know. However, I’ve come to realize that that does more harm than good.

Asking questions also helps me work better with my highly skilled and experienced team, because they are usually happy to explain concepts and provide support. Trying to figure things out all by myself led to wrong assumptions and frequently caused unmet expectations.

5. Deadlines

A man in a suit and tie standing outside.

When is it due?

A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. It always has a start date and an end date - so do the project tasks.

I’ve learnt how essential it is to communicate deadlines always. This helps to set the right expectations for all parties involved. It’s mostly better to over-communicate than to have gaps in understanding.

In Summary,

Project Management (PM) education and tools such as PowerPoint, Word and Excel are essential to understand the language of the PM world and navigate day to day work.

However, the most essential skill of a Coordinator in my experience is the ability to communicate effectively and manage relationships across stakeholders. Basic communication is the foundational pillar that all other skill sets rest upon.

10 Reasons Why a BA Career Is Awesome (Pt 2)

We shared with you part 1 of '10 reasons a BA career is awesome'. The first 4 reasons were; Impact, high income, anyone can become a BA & remote work. Read the first part article here

Here is Part 2 - 10 Reasons Why A BA Career Is Awesome

5. Demand & job growth

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the need for business analysts to grow 14% from 2018 to 2028 - much faster than the general occupation average. In today’s complex, global business environment, firms continually require the skills of BAs to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage. As long as there is Business change, there will be a need for Business Analysts.

6. No two days are ever the same

If you prefer to have different streams of work & project types without a set routine, you will find fulfillment in a BA career. You will constantly be taking on different project types and tasks. On any given day you could be working on user surveys, data analysis, wireframe design, process maps, configuration, software testing or business case development.

7. Work full time or contract

BAs can work in full time roles, or on temporary contracts. In a post COVID era where the business world is more reluctant to take risks, this flexibility is a significant privilege, and opportunity. Whether you prefer a permanent role, or you like to move from one role to another, executing projects, the BA career can give you either.

8. Stay at the forefront of innovation

Technology is advancing at the fastest rate in history, and BAs are responsible to facilitate the requirements and adoption of this innovation. In the right BA role, you would always be exposed to the newest trends in Business & Technology - a foundation for a resilient career.

9. Work in any industry

A B.A can work in any industry, so long as they are willing to build their knowledge of that industry. In my 10 years as a B.A, I’ve thrived working in Insurance, Government, Healthcare & Education. Industry exposure increases future work prospects.

10. Work with different stakeholders

During Project delivery, B.As need to ensure all stakeholders’ needs are met. As such you will meet with interesting people in different roles. These people will be both technical, and non-technical. This exposure will enable you to learn about different business functions. It will also create an opportunity to improve your people skills.

10 Reasons Why a BA Career Is Awesome (Pt 1)

I've been a Business Analyst for the last 10 years, working with the Government, Tech startups & Fortune 500 companies. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better career to satisfy my drive to make the world a better place, utilizing technology.

Here are 10 Reasons Why a BA Career Is Awesome!

  1. Drive massive Business impact, everyday

BAs are responsible to facilitate Business process improvement, and manage requirements for mission critical products. Some of the systems I’ve managed requirements for include eLearning software, digital health tech, government tax systems, and others. These systems had hundreds of thousands of users. When you build something with a team, and you see the smile it puts on people’s faces, it really gives your hard work meaning.

  1. Earn a High Income

The average BA salary according to Ziprecruiter is $78,000 p/ year. By many standards, this is a good salary, but it gets better. Experienced BAs can make as high as $145K p/ year. Some of the alumni from the SkillHat BA course have hit well over the $100K p/ year mark, shortly after graduation. You can do it too.

  1. Anyone can become a BA

SkillHat alumni have transitioned into BA roles from varying backgrounds such as customer service, healthcare, marketing, tech support, etc. Absolutely anyone can become a BA with the right training, exposure & mentorship.

  1. Work Remote

Most BA tasks / jobs can be done remotely from the comfort of your home. This is a great advantage that allows you to apply for work anywhere on the globe. With less time spent commuting, you can be more productive, and you’ll have the time to do more things you love - whether that’s spending time with family or enjoying hobbies.

This is part 1 of a two-part email series. In the next post, we will share more nuggets around why the BA career is awesome.

The SkillHat Business Analysis course is an excellent starting point for a BA career. The course provides practical training to get you BA skilled and job ready. However, when you’re trying to make a career transition, you need more than training - you need a mentor & a coach. After your 7 week training you will be paired with 1-on-1 Senior BA who will work with you to;
